The Science of Light
Advances in science are revealing insights into Quantum Biology, an interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand the role of quantum mechanics in biological processes.
As humans, we’ve evolved and adapted to operate on light. Our mitochondria are often described as the “powerhouses” of the cell because they produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of the cell, and of human life. Advances in technology are improving our understanding of mitochondria at the quantum level, revealing that the health and efficiency of our mitochondria are deeply influenced by the type of light we’re exposed to.
Natural sunlight, especially in the morning, is believed to optimize mitochondrial function. The light from the sun, extending from the infrared (IR) all the way to the ultraviolet (UV), interacts with the skin and eyes, causing the release of electrons in the body. These electrons play a crucial role in the body’s energy production and various biochemical reactions.
The mitochondria produce ATP through a process called the electron transport chain, and it’s becoming clear that the quality of light exposure affects the flow of electrons in this chain, influencing ATP production efficiency. In fact, many modern diseases can be traced back to mitochondrial dysfunction. This can be due to a variety of factors, including poor diet, lack of proper light exposure, and other lifestyle factors.
Exposure to artificial blue light, the type typically found in screens and LED lights, can be harmful to the mitochondria. On the other hand, the right light can be the key to positive health, targeting the mitochondria that power each and every one of us.

Anders B. Christiansen
Founder
With a career in design spanning over 25 years, Anders has always held a deep fascination with the inner workings of light and colour, and their impact in communication. It was when Anders discovered the impact of light on human physiology that Anders and Karl came together, with Anders drawing on decades of business acumen to commercialize the third generation of Monocrom light projector system.
Anders is the creative director of Created By Black, a global creative agency, and co-founder of Monocrom.
Karl Ryberg
Founder
After 25 years of research in applied optics in the medical realm, Karl Ryberg and the Stockholm-based company Monocrom have launched the third generation of their unique projector system for monochromatic light treatments with colored light.
Karl Ryberg is a trained architect and psychologist and specializes in the effect of light and color on people. Karl Ryberg founded the company Monocrom, which develops, produces and sells the unique Monocrom domes for color light treatments. Monocrom itself educates the licensees of their light therapy concept, who are represented in the USA, England, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, South Africa, the Maldives, Malaysia and Australia. Karl Ryberg holds seminars and lectures at educational institutions, hospitals and in companies.
Karl Ryberg is the founder of Monocrom and has authored and published three books on the subject of light-based therapy:
- “Färger i vardagsliv och terapi” (Colors in everyday life and theraph)
- “Levande färger” (Living colors)
- “Ljusterapi och färgdesign” (Light therapy and color design)
